POCKETS Library
The Junction Triangle, Toronto, ON
The central goal of this design is to reintegrate a pocket of urban escape amongst the sprawling industrialized landscape. It brings a pocket of nature and greenery into the brick and concrete surroundings by having the library serve as the heart within a glass exterior structure that takes inspiration from greenhouses.
Libraries are central hubs for community and information. This double-skin project allows for these factors to expand beyond the traditional bookstacks and elevates the user experience by integrating a pocket of the outdoors that can be enjoyed year-round despite the unpredictable climates of its site.
The Site
Located in the heart of Toronto, POCKETS Library is surrounded by bustling infrastructure. The front faces the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) while a railway runs along the back. To keep the library as a primary pocket of urban escape on the site, trees line the back to provide separation from the fast-paced surroundings, while the front windows allow the interior space to frame the MOCA, with the library becoming a momentary museum featuring the one across its street.
